SANCTUARY OF THE ANGELS ANGELS?
This site has had a long and interesting history. It was at first just a few thoughts jotted down because a friend had registered a xoom site for me when he saw the technical trials I was having with angelfire. Then the angelfire site began to be too cramped, and some work I was doing on behalf of the abused seemed to have a different 'feel' to the original sanctuary it seemed wise to begin to work on this as a separate thing. But always it has felt as if the Sanctuary of the Angels has taken second place. I've never promoted it, and not really had the time and energy to work on it the way I felt the subject deserved. In the last few weeks, two things have become
clear to me.
Two is that someone else does *not* want it. I have had more difficulties and disasters with this site than i have had with anything since I struggled with another task in the seventies. After a lot of prayer and thinking I now 'know' in my heart that the site may never be famous as these things go but also that it is important, for me, and for 'those it is meant for' that it be done. It is linked to the Sanctuary and without the Sanctuary it would not exist in it's present form. But it is also different. Because this is a place which deals with spiritual battle, and with intelligence, spiritual, mental, emotional and physical, it has a life of its own. It is here that I shall include prayers and links that are to do with our major struggles with 'the spirit of this age', and it is here that we will deal with the hard things round us.. In some ways this is a logical and necessary outcome of facing the 'hard things' of the gospel which contemplation and meditation lead us to address. Those things are found in The Sanctuary. But those struggles for self control lead us to be peaceful people in a world of violence. Whether we like it or not we are called to engage in a real struggle. There are violences and injustices in our every day lives, and in the assumptions of our daily lives. The centre of all for me is the Contemplative
Act. The One Who Is. The Living God. Nothing else is truly 'necessary'.
Human beings are all born with a sacred core. All of them have a spiritual nature. We all have talents. We have spiritual talents, mental talents, emotional talents, physical talents. We have aspirations and yearnings. And we have a soul. What ever our theology we have magical abilities. We are born with different psychic strengths and weaknesses. Without moral and intellectual integrity, without intellectual and spiritual discipline we run grave dangers. Especially if we deal with these talents by denial. The parable of the talents is enough to show us this. We have awarenesses of truths - we know in our innermost being that time itself is an illusion, that our material physical forms are a materialization of our spiritual nature. We are aware of 'things unseen'. We know in our hearts that 'all things are connected'. I suspect that we are also more than a little afraid of this. We look, I suspect, for the wrong kind of certainties of faith. We are suspicious of those things that make us strong, which inspire us to think and to be independent. We mistake the call for 'obedience' and make it a demand so that we avoid responsibility. Angels - as it has often been pointed out - are beings whose history is older than the Judaeo-Christian tradition, just as our magical and emotional talents are native to our being. No angel would permit us to worship 'the wrong thing' Neither is an angel - in the sense of which I speak - truly 'a being like us'. If we see an angel, it has 'made itself visible in a way which is easier for us to understand. But we 'feel' them - as we feel the elemental presences of other beings. In many ways we have been misled, both by those who are 'angelolaters' and those who are adamantly convinced that there are no such things, or if there are, they are none of our business. There are, of course there are, angels who are human. Messengers of God, people who stand watch over others and who guard, guide, protect and nurture others. There are those who have been chosen from before time was to stand for what is good, true and right. But there are also the angels and ministers of light who do not usually take a human form. Ideas. The very word means 'goddess within'. The essence of Justice, Peace, Harmony.. as 'things' they have no reality. One cannot put a soul in a bottle and measure it. It is the wrong kind of container and the wrong kind of stick. But as beings they can and do affect us. We feel and see their influence, we may even incarnate a little of their being. It may even be that we are the perfect 'bottle' in which to hold and express a soul. Certain it is that being human is one way to 'measure' spiritual experiences. Oh it took me a long time to realize and understand that these beings of my creative inner imagination were not only 'real' but had a life and energy all of their own. For my inner 'pictures' were not those of the picture book angels. Just as it took me some time to realize that the Archangel I saw 'least' clearly was the one with whom my own inner being most closely aligned. Whether we 'see them' or not, whether we acknowledge their being and investigate their reality or not, or whether we embrace them with open minds and hearts or not, nevertheless they will continue to exist, and to affect our lives, for they are part of the fabric of the 'way things are'. This site then is my gift to them and to us.
It comes from a life in which there has been and perhaps always will be
rough places to be made smooth, crooked things to be made straight, but
it is also a life in which the company of angels has made a glorious challenge
out of trials that might have merely laid me low, left me depressed and
helpless. Of course I still feel those things. But they no longer rule
my life. I know that if I want help I have only to ask. Sometimes that
help 'takes a while'.
I find myself studying Martin Luther King's 'Letter from Birmingham', and asking myself: how do these principles apply in a life spent in close proximity to non understanding. I read Mother Teresa of Calcutta and realize that she attracted loving companions. I ask myself: how can these principles apply in my life. One thing is sure where there is the sign of an angel, there is the sign of a passage to be worked through. Sign of the struggle and the battle. An angel visited our lady and proclaimed 'Good News' - news that entailed her being an 'unmarried mother' among other things.. Blessed are you. After the temptation in the wilderness, we are told that angels comforted Him in the wilderness. And in the Garden of Gethsemane, when Jesus was in so much distress that he sweated blood, angels came and ministered to him. These beings live and love and do 'interfere' in our lives. By the love of God they are here for us. Let those who have eyes to see, See, |
